FIVE MAGPIES NAMED IN DIAMONDS SQUAD

Tiarne Swersky - June 27, 2017

Magpies Madi Robinson, Sharni Layton, Caitlin Thwaites, April Brandley and Kim Ravaillion will return to the international netball stage after they were today named in the 2017-18 Australian Diamonds squad.

National coach Lisa Alexander announced an 18-player squad, with all five Magpies set to feature in both of the Diamonds’ upcoming Quad Series and Constellation Cup teams.

Headlining the five Magpies is Layton, who led the Diamonds during their Quad Series tour of South Africa and England earlier this year.

The Magpies’ star defender was recognized for a stellar year of national netball representation on Saturday evening, having been awarded the International Player of the Year at the Australian Netball Awards.

Thwaites - who vice-captained the Diamonds on the tour – has capped off a remarkable first season with the Magpies after winning a host of honours, including the club’s best and fairest award last week.

Australia’s midcourt and defensive end will remain the same across both test series, with Magpies Netball’s Ravaillion, Robinson and Brandley set to play in both international fixtures.

According to Netball Australia, selection was “based on performances in Suncorp Super Netball, in addition to performance and combinations in previous international test matches”.

“We have witnessed exceptional performances in Suncorp Super Netball and on the international stage, with a number of athletes demonstrating career-best form,” said Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander.

“Athletes have shown great skill, drive and resilience, impressing the National Selectors and I.

“All selections are difficult, but given the wealth of talent on display, this has been one of the most challenging.”

The 18-player squad will come together for a Diamonds camp to train at the Netball Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport, from 18 – 24 July.

“Our squad boasts versatile and flexible athletes. With the Suncorp Super Netball season commencing after the Commonwealth Games, now is the time for our athletes to get down to business in preparation for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018,” Alexander explained.

“All eyes are on our goal of winning the gold medal in front of a home crowd, and the Netball Quad Series and Constellation Cup are critical milestones leading into the pinnacle event.”

The Diamonds’ first Quad Series match will be against the England Roses at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on August 26.

Tickets to the Netball Quad Series and Constellation Cup are on sale now via Ticketek.com.au (Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra) and Ticketemaster.com.au (Adelaide).
