GOODEN DEPARTS MAGPIES
Tiarne Swersky - April 20, 2018
Victorian goaler Samantha Gooden has accepted a Super Netball contract from the Melbourne Vixens and will depart the Collingwood Magpies ahead of the 2018 season.
The 21-year-old was set to commence her second season with the club as a training partner and Tasmanian Magpies player. However, Gooden will now join the Vixens as a permanent replacement player.
Gooden, who lined up for the Magpies against the Vixens in round one of the 2017 SSN season, will now don the red, blue and green on Saturday April 28 when the two teams kick off the 2018 season.
Gooden said it was a difficult decision to leave the Magpies after two years with the club.
“I have loved my two years at the Magpies and I’ll be forever grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this team,” Gooden told Magpies Netball.
“It will be very surreal lining up against the Magpies on Saturday. I’ve learnt so much from the coaching group and my teammates during these two years and I’ll cherish those moments for the rest of my career.
“It was a very difficult and emotional decision for me to leave, but I know this a great opportunity for me and my career, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
General Manager of Magpies Netball Jennifer McIntyre credited Gooden’s character and work ethic in her two years with the club.
“It’s a bittersweet moment for us, because we’re so proud and excited for Sam, but we’re disappointed to be losing her.”
“She’s an extraordinary person who will no doubt have a long and successful career in the sport, so we’re very excited for her.
“I’d be lying if I said it won’t be a little strange to see her across on the Vixens bench on Saturday, but that’s sport, and that’s why the future of this league is in good stead, because of young, talented players like Sam Gooden.”
The Magpies and Vixens will launch the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball on Saturday April 28 at Hisense Arena.
