HEARTBREAKING SEMI-FINAL LOSS ENDS MAGPIES’ SEASON

Tiarne Swersky - June 3, 2017

The Magpies have fallen agonisingly short of advancing to the Suncorp Super Netball Preliminary Final after a Kristina Brice goal in the dying seconds of the match left the hometown Giants with a thrilling one-goal victory.

After a strong third quarter response from the Magpies - where they outscored the Giants 15-12 off the back of a Caitlin Thwaites shooting clinic - the Giants rallied back from a six-goal deficit with seven minutes to go in the final term to claim a 52-51 victory.

With both teams going goal-for-goal in the final moments of the contest, a Susan Pettitt centre pass was lobbed over Sharni Layton and found Brice in the shooting circle, and the Giants goal shooter calmly slotted the match-winning goal.

In her 150th National League Game, Magpie captain Madi Robinson was named match MVP, following a gallant performance which included 23 goal assists, 29 centre-pass receives, 35 circle feeds and two interceptions.

Shae Brown played out the full 60 minutes as goal attack for the Magpies, shooting 14 goals from 16 attempts (88 per cent accuracy) and recording four goal assists, two rebounds, three deflections and 14 centre-pass receives.

Brown partnered Thwaites in the shooting circle, with the league’s top goal scorer converting 35 goals from 45 attempts.

Defenders Sharni Layton (four deflections, five interceptions, two rebounds) and April Brandley (two interceptions, five deflections) battled the whole game, but it was Jo Harten and Brice’s attacking prowess that proved too strong.

The victory means the Giants will advance to face the Melbourne Vixens at Hisense Arena in the Preliminary Final. For the Magpies, it’s season over for 2017.
