Introducing the Tasmanian Magpies co-captains
Collingwood Magpies Netball along with Netball Tasmania is pleased to announce that Ella Bayliss and Hayley Sansom will serve as co-captains of the Tasmanian Magpies Team for the 2017 Australian Netball League season.
The pair showed incredible leadership skills as well as experience at their training camp earlier this month and are both excited to be representing the very first Tasmanian Magpies ANL side.
Sansom, hailing from Tasmania, has remarkable experience representing her state since her debut in the U17 team in 2007. She has also represented Tasmania at the National Underage Championships as a wing-attack, centre and keeper. This is her sixth ANL season having previously represented Tasmania up until 2014.
Ella Bayliss takes on her previous team the Victorian Fury this weekend and was also the Fury’s Most Valuable Player in 2016. The mid-courter was also a member of the VNL Championship Team of the Year for 2016 representing D.C North East Blaze.
Both girls are keen to step out this weekend for Round 1 even though the team has had limited time together with training held across both states. However, the team has been working exceptionally hard to ensure everyone is confident and in good shape for their first match.
Head Coach Jon Fletcher explained “Bayliss and Sansom were chosen based on their experience as well as on court attributes. But also to ensure the two states were represented.” Fletcher also acknowledged that “netball is a team sport so everyone has a role to play and has a place to step up.”
Bayliss admits that “it is a challenge having players in two states and that this means the team has to work harder to develop relationships both on and off the court. But I love a challenge and I’m up for anything.”
The Tasmanian Magpies will face the Victorian Fury at Hisense Arena on Saturday 18 February at 5.00pm prior to the Collingwood Magpies taking on the Melbourne Vixens. Our Tasmanian team will then battle it out against the Fury on Sunday 19th February at the State Netball and Hockey Centre (SNHC) at 12.00pm.
Tickets purchased for the Magpies v Vixens match will provide access to see the Tasmanian Magpies on the Saturday and on Sunday, tickets can be purchased at the door at the SNHC.
