MAGPIES BOLSTER COACHING PANEL
Tiarne Swersky - November 2, 2017
Magpies Netball has strengthened its coaching stocks ahead of the 2018 season after securing the services of defensive specialist, Rob Wright.
Arriving at the Holden Centre following seven years with the New South Wales Swifts, Wright joins the Magpies as a defensive coach.
Widely regarded as one of the game’s best strategic minds, Wright will oversee the Magpies’ backcourt, working closely with talented defenders Sharni Layton, April Brandley and Matilda Garrett.
After four seasons as the Swifts’ head coach, Wright says he’s ready for a new challenge in his coaching career.
“This role was the perfect avenue to do what I’m really good at, and what I really love,” Wright told Magpies Netball.
“Defensive skills and strategies are my specialties. I also enjoy the performance analysis side of coaching, so those will be my main two areas that I concentrate on.
“To be a part of this club, with all of its history and success, it’s just an amazing opportunity to work in such a special place.”
General Manager of Magpies Netball Jennifer McIntyre said Wright’s elite coaching credentials would be a valuable addition to the club.
“We’re delighted to have Rob on board and we think he’ll compliment our team of coaches really well,” McIntyre said.
“He is one of the best defensive coaches in the game and we have no doubt that he’ll enhance and innovate our program in 2018 and beyond.”
After a successful tenure in Sydney – including back-to-back Grand Final appearances – Wright will be reacquainted with some familiar faces when he enters the Holden Centre.
“When you look at the players in the Collingwood line-up, there is class across the court,” he said.
“The beauty of it is that I’ve coached six of them over the journey, so to be able reunite with those players is pretty special.
“I’m looking forward to continuing to build those relationships, as well as developing new ones with some of the up-and-coming talent the Magpies have on their roster.”
Wright completes the Magpies’ coaching panel for 2018, joining assistant coach Cathy Fellows and head coach Kristy Keppich-Birrell.
“Rob’s ability to analyse the opposition is first-class, and he will be such an important member of our program going forward,” Keppich-Birrell said.
“I can’t wait to have him on our bench, rather than on the opposing one!”
Wright will join the Magpies ahead of the 2017-18 preseason, set to commence on the week of November 6.
