MATCH PREVIEW: ROUND 2
Tiarne Swersky - May 4, 2018
For the first time in 2018, the Magpies will get on a plane and travel west to face the West Coast Fever at Perth Arena.
With the narrowest of losses in round one, the Magpies will be out to silent the Fever’s home crowd and pinch a road victory to kickstart their 2018 campaign.
The Magpies and the Vixens launched the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) season in a blockbuster match at Hisense Arena.
After trailing by seven goals early in the game, the Magpies stormed back into contention, taking the lead with minutes remaining in the game.
But a last-minute conversion by Mwai Kumwenda gave the Vixens the lead – and the victory.
It was a different story for the Fever in round one, as they demolished the Adelaide Thunderbirds by 18 goals on the road.
Jhaniele Fowler was dominant with 66 goals, while Ingrid Colyer and Jess Anstiss were prolific in the mid-court.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Round 13, 2018 - Collingwood Magpies (49) defeated West Coast Fever (42)
KEEP AN EYE ON…
- Fever shooter Jhaniele Fowler broke the national league record for most goals scored by an individual in a game in Round 1, with 66 goals from 68 attempts at 97 percent accuracy. The previous Suncorp Super Netball record was 50 goals, from Caitlin Bassett in Round 2, 2017 and Caitlin Thwaites in Round 8, 2017. This will make for an intriguing match-up between Fowler and Sharni Layton on Saturday.
- The Fever were the most accurate team in Round 1, shooting 74 goals from 77 attempts at 96 percent accuracy. The Magpies converted 58 goals from 67 attempts in the goaling third, at an accuracy of 87 per cent.
- In round one, the Magpies made SSN history by claiming the first bonus points in the new and improved league ladder system. Despite losing the game, the Magpies amassed three bonus points, having won three out of the four quarters on the day. The Fever recorded the most bonus points (four) of the round, putting them at the top of the SSN ladder on eight points overall.
- It will be a home-coming of sorts for three Magpies players, with April Brandley, Shae Brown and Ash Brazill all returning to Perth to face their former side. Brazill captained the Fever for two years, Brandley was a defensive force from 2015-16, while Brown played over 100+ games for the Western Australian side.
WORDS FROM THE PIES
"The Fever are going to be a quality side," Assistant coach Rob Wright said after the Magpies' round one loss to the Vixens.
"With Fowler in their side this year, they're a different proposition.
"It will be a very different game to the Vixens, so we'll have to make sure we come up with a plan to stop the damage they can do and keep building on the things we did well in round one."
