ROUND 10 MATCH PREVIEW

Tiarne Swersky - April 28, 2017

With two consecutive wins on the board for the first time this season, a confident Magpies outfit will host the Queensland Firebirds in Launceston for their round 10 home game at the Silverdome.

In a mouth-watering fourth versus fifth match-up, the Magpies can afford themselves a three-point buffer over the Firebirds on the SSN ladder if successful on Sunday afternoon.

In a Collingwood first, Magpies Netball will play for points in Tasmania as a part of the ‘Festival of Netball’ in Launceston being held from the 27th-30th April.

Along with the Firebirds clash, the Magpies will host a super clinic (Thursday April 27), an open training (Friday 28 April) and a president’s function pregame (Sunday April 30). All details and tickets are available on our website.

RECENT FORM

After finally claiming a major scalp in the competition, Magpies coach head coach Kristy Keppich-Birrell said her team exhibited its best netball to date against the Giants.

“I’m so excited to have two wins in a row for the first time in our club," she said after the round nine victory.

"The girls are just stoked. I think we saw their best netball for more minutes than we’ve seen for the entire the season.

“I’m so proud of all of them. It was such a team performance."

The Magpies defeated the Giants in Sydney on Sunday afternoon, coming away with the points in a thrilling 59-56 finish.

Magpies captain Madi Robinson was named the player of the match for the second week in a row, leading her team to victory with a hard-fought performance in the middle.

Goal shooter Caitlin Thwaites continued her prolific season form, while goal attack Cody Lange converted three goals in the final three minutes to seal the Magpies’ victory.

The Queensland Firebirds will be looking to get back on the winner’s list after playing out a draw with the Sunshine Coast Lightning in Brisbane on Saturday evening.

The Firebirds sit fifth on the SSN ladder with nine points, while the Magpies sit in fourth place with 10 points and a stronger percentage. For the Firebirds to remain in finals contention, Sunday’s game is a must-win.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Round 2, 2017, Magpies (54) defeated Firebirds (50)

Despite a dominant performance by Firebirds goal shooter Romelda Aiken, it was the Magpies attacking duo of Thwaites (32/40) and Alice Teague-Neeld (22/31) who led the Magpies to a four-goal victory in Brisbane.

Robinson was influential with 17 goal assists and 46 feeds in the circle, while Sharni Layton caused havoc for the Firebirds with nine deflections and four interceptions.

KEEP AN EYE ON…

  • The former Firebird: Kim Ravaillion made a perfect return to Brisbane in round two with an MVP performance (10 goal assists, 26 feeds) against her former team. After a strong performance against the Giants on the weekend, the Diamonds centre could be due for another notable performance.
  • With key match-ups all over the court, one to keep an eye on will be the Layton v Aiken battle. Both players were influential for their respective teams in round two, and there’s no doubt it will be another fierce contest on Sunday. With a clear height disparity, Layton will have to produce one of her signature defensive performances to stop the dominant Aiken.
  • Speaking of Aiken, she has been vital to the Firebirds leading the league for most offensive rebounds (64), with the goal shooter accounting for 45 of them. On the other hand, Layton leads the league with the most intercepts (36) and sits second for deflections (46). Don’t miss this match-up!
