ROUND 12 MATCH PREVIEW
Tiarne Swersky – May 12, 2017
The Magpies will be looking to get back in the winner’s column when they come up against the New South Wales Swift in round 12 Super Netball action.
Before hitting the road for the last two games of the season, the Magpies will have one final chance to play in front of their passionate home crowd at Hisense Arena.
Collingwood’s three-game winning streak came to an abrupt end last Saturday night as the Sunshine Coast Lighting defeated the Magpies by seven goals at Hisense Arena.
After the away side stormed ahead in the first quarter, the Magpies tried to claw their way back into the contest in the second half, largely thanks to the substitutinos of Shae Brown at centre at Alice Teague-Neeld at goal attack. But it was too little, too late as the experienced core of Geva Mentor, Laura Langman and Caitlin Bassett led the Sunshine Coast to victory.
Magpies coach Kristy Keppich-Birrell said it was absolutely “an opportunity missed” for her team.
“We’ve got the players, we’ve got the plan, we just couldn’t execute for enough minutes,’’ she told the media post-game.
“Some good things came out of it that we know what players are going to do when they come on and off the court, but absolutely a missed opportunity to really cement that spot in the four.”
The NSW Swifts notched their third victory of the Super Netball season, defeating the West Coast Fever by two goals in Sydney.
Down by five goals at the final change, the Swifts rallied together in the fourth quarter to outscore the Fever 16-6, clinching a comeback victory.
Goal shooter Sam Wallace was efficient shooting 90 per cent in goals, while wing attack Claire O’Brien worked tirelessly in the mid court to secure victory for her team.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Round 6, 2017 – Magpies (55) defeated Swifts (54) at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre
On the road, with their backs against the wall, a Caitlin Thwaites match-winning goal awarded the Magpies the slightest of victories over the Swifts.
With only 10 seconds remaining, the former Swift was fed the ball and was able to score off her own rebound to secure a gripping win for her new side.
Thwaites finished with 36/39 goals, while Cody Lange stepped into the goal attack role to produce an impressive 16/19 performance in goals.
KEEP AN EYE ON…
- The return of the Swifts’ leaders: The travelling side have been given a major boost ahead of Saturday night’s game with the news that captain Abbey McCulloch and vice-captain Paige Hadley will be returning from injury. Both leaders have been sidelined with knee injuries for the past few rounds, and will no doubt be eager to make an impact upon returning against the Magpies.
- The pace of the Swifts: According to Collingwood defender Micaela Wilson, the Magpies got caught up by the pace of the Sunshine Lightning last week, and she believes her former team - the Swifts - may try the same tactic on the weekend. “The Swifts are a younger, enthusiastic side. They may try to force the pace as well, so we need to be level-headed, show composure and get off to a really strong start,” she said.
- Holden’s Astra Sing-along: Come down to our final home game at Hisense Arena and sing the Collingwood theme song with Ash Brazill and Sharni Layton. Holden’s activation is located at the main entrance on the Western Concourse, and by participating in the singalong, you could be in the running to win official signed Magpies Netball merchandise!
