SSN Round 1 - Match Report

The city of Melbourne’s Round 1 Suncorp Super Netball inaugural battle between the Magpies and Vixens lived up to expectations with a see-sawing competitive game that finished with the Vixens edging out the Magpies to win 58-55 in front of just over 8,000 fans at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena.

It was the first time since 2007 that Melbourne had two teams facing off against each other and from the opening whistle fans were treated to an intense match that was both fast and physical with neither side leaving anything on the sidelines.

Madi Robinson, Kim Ravaillion & Shae Brown performed well in the mid-court to set up the attack and Caitlin Thwaites provided a strong target with versatility as a holding and moving goaler up forward, shooting 47 goals from 48 attempts in a dominant display.

Ash Brazill was relentless in putting the Vixens under pressure on the contest to help create turnovers for her team, but the combination of the Vixens’ two dominant forwards in Mwai Kumwenda (29 goals) and Tegan Philip (29 goals) proved too much for Magpies defenders Sharni Layton and April Brandley.

One positive for the Magpies was the introduction of temporary replacement player Samantha Gooden who upon entering the game had an immediate impact providing another target up forward.

With the Magpies squad having limited playing time together in the lead-up to Round 1, their connections strengthened as the game progressed and supporters were given a preview of the potential potency of the Magpies outfit.

The reliance upon Caitlin Thwaites up forward who scored 47 of the Magpies’ goals is an area that the team will need to address before heading up to Brisbane to take on the Firebirds in Round 2 this weekend.
