SSN Round 2 - Match Report
The Magpies flew high in Round 2, taking their first win 55- 54 over the Queensland Firebirds at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday night.
The win restored confidence in the team after a difficult first game against the Vixens.
Senior Coach Kristy Keppich-Birrell said “(The team) put the pressure on themselves because they knew they could handle it.”
After taking a 3-goal lead early in the game, the reigning premiers came back fighting, making it a tense first half.
Keppich-Birrell acknowledged, “It was a tight tussle. It was backwards and forwards and really hard fought.”
Alice Teague-Neeld brought her all the to the match with some fantastic goaling and footwork within the ring. Keppich-Birrell acknowledged that Teague-Neeld “stepped up this week after not having been herself in the previous match.”
April Brandley’s tight hold on Gretal Tippett was vital to the team’s win, taking nine intercepts.
Battling it up against her old team, Kim Ravaillion’s proved strong, producing 27 feeds and 10 goal assists that saw her awarded MVP.
The rivalry continued between Sharni Layton and Romelda Aiken and saw Layton take some important deflections.
Robinson’s use of space through the mid-court and around the ring proved vital in providing 17 goal assists.
Keppich-Birrell was thrilled with the win and noted that she was very proud of the team’s efforts that was greatly celebrated by the fans.
“It’s the beginning but we are just excited about what’s going to come next.”
The Magpies look forward to their Round 3 challenge against the undefeated Giants this Saturday 4 March, 7pm at Hisense Arena.
