MAGPIES BRING HOME THE POINTS IN A THRILLER

The Magpies celebrated an impressive against the NSW Swifts in Sydney to take their season to three wins and three losses.

In a hard fought contest the Magpies claimed victory by the slimmest of margins with the final score reading 54 – 55.

With the scores locked at 54 a piece & only seconds left on the clock, the Magpies held their nerve controlling the play through the mid-court & feeding the ball to spearhead Caitlin Thwaites, who scored the rebound off her own shot & nailed a crucial goal to secure the win.

Magpies Head Coach, Kristy Keppich-Birrell said, “We’re just probably relieved that the work we did during the week around scenarios & putting ourselves in that position, we actually had the know how of what to do in that moment of time”.

“We don’t want to be in that position & we’ve identified some things we really need to work on, we’ll take the win & be happy with it, but we always want more”.

With a vocal home crowd trying to will the Swifts to victory, Keppich-Birrell changed up the Magpies attack towards the end of the first quarter introducing Shae Brown to goal attack in a surprise move that rattled the hosts.

Sharni Layton put a scare through the Magpies camp after taking a hard fall towards the end of the second quarter, but went on to play out the match with heavy strapping to her right knee.

With Brown providing another target shooting 3 goals from 6 attempts & Caitlin Thwaites dominating up forward the Magpies went into the half time break level on 27 goals with the Swifts.

Cody Lange stepped up in the second half with an impressive performance & finished the game with 16 goals, while in the mid court Madi Robinson, Kim Ravaillion & Ash Brazill all showed experience by absorbing the Swifts pressure to control the tempo of the game.

Caitlin Thwaites was again colossal in goal finishing with 36 goals at 92 per cent & both Sharni Layton & April Brandley held up the defense to get the better of the Swifts goalers Sam Wallace & Helen Housby.

The focus for the Magpies quickly shifts to the Round 7 clash with the Vixens on Sunday when #thebattle part 2 takes place at Hisense Arena.
