Tassie Magpies finalise coaching structure
Tiarne Swersky - November 28, 2017
The Tasmanian Magpies have finalised its new-look 2018 coaching panel with the appointment of Claire Dennis to the assistant coaching position.
Dennis will aid Kate Upton, who will take the reigns as head coach of the Collingwood Magpies’ affiliated Australian Netball League (ANL) team.
After a successful netball career in Tasmania, Dennis turned her attention to coaching.
Having represented the state at the highest level during her playing days, Dennis was named inaugural captain of the Tasmanian ANL team.
Most recently, she’s been honing her coaching craft with the Launceston based Cavaliers Netball Club, where she was the assistant coach of the premiership winning 19/U and open state teams.
Netball Tasmania chief executive Aaron Pidgeon credited Dennis’ progression through the Tasmanian netball coaching ranks.
“We’ve been looking for someone with a strong mix of coaching skills and experience with elite programs to fill the assistant coach position, and Claire will fill that role extremely well,” Pidgeon told Magpies Netball.
“Claire has played under some very experienced coaches, and is well versed in what it takes to be successful, as well as how to deal with the challenges of a team that travels regularly.
“We’re confident our athletes will learn a lot from Claire and the standards she will set for the behaviour and work ethic will be second to none.”
In a further boost for the Tasmanian Magpies, Ann Pearce will join the team as assistant manager, while
Netball Tasmania’s High Performance Coach Joanne Macdermid will continue to work closely with the program, and oversee the ongoing development of Tasmanian athletes.
“The team staff structure this year has allowed for depth in the management ranks.”
“Ann has a wealth of experience in team management and we’re really pleased that she has joined the team in 2018.
“Ann’s commitment to netball is unquestionable and the program will be all the better for her addition to the team.”
The Tasmanian Magpies will compete in the 2018 Australian Netball League, with Collingwood Magpies training partners Cody Lange, Sam Gooden, Vanessa Augustini, Mary Livesey, Sharni Lambden and Mel Bragg set to feature for the Tasmanian side.
Collingwood's Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) squad will mark its return to Tasmania in 2018, after moving its round six home match against the Queensland Firebirds to Launceston.
Following the success of the 2017 encounter, the Magpies will meet the Firebirds in a rematch at the Silverdome. Originally scheduled for Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne, the two sides will now face off on Sunday June 3 in Launceston, set to be broadcast on Telstra TV.
As part of the Magpies Netball’s 2018 membership packages, there are a range of memberships available to Tasmanian fans. All information can be found here.
