The Tasmanian Magpies have continued their strong start to the 2019 ANL season, scoring two wins over the Canberra Giants in round two.
Magpies’ coach Elissa Kent was particularly impressed with her team’s consistent physical pressure around the ball in both games.
“We were able to win seven out of the total eight quarters over the weekend, with only one drawn quarter, which is a great achievement for our girls,” Kent said.
“The fact that we were able to try a range of on-court combinations and get all 12 Magpies on court in each game was fantastic, particularly for our growth and development.”
The Magpies made a solid start in Saturday’s first game, taking a five-goal lead early in the opening term.
They remained on top throughout the remainder of the game, winning 60 to 52.
The Giants came out firing when they returned to the court for game two on Sunday.
Their strong defensive pressure down the Magpies’ attacking end saw the Pies restricted to a one-goal lead at quarter-time.
“That first quarter of game two was a little bit of a shoot-out, so we really needed to work on our defensive efforts,” Elissa said.
Finding composure in the second term, the Pies quickly gained the upper hand, eventually running out 75 to 57 winners.
“I put the second win down to our team’s ability to follow instructions as well as the players’ aptitude to adjust the game plan, which was effective in limiting the Giants’ scoring power,” Kent said.
Next week the Tasmanian Magpies will take on the Southern Force in front of a home crowd at the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre.
