Collingwood has all but settled its 10 woman squad for the 2019 Suncorp Super Netball season.
Australian defender April Brandley and upcoming goaler Gabby Sinclair have signed on for SSN 3, leaving only one vacancy on a refreshed squad to be led by new coach Rob Wright.
Brandley, a foundation Magpies Netball player, is currently in New Zealand with the Australian Diamonds ahead of the upcoming Quad Series and Constellation Cup. Magpie mid-courters Kim Ravaillion and Kelsey Browne are also in New Zealand.
Brandley enjoyed a fine 2018 SSN campaign, often working in partnership with best and fairest winner Ash Brazill. With the emergence of Matilda Garrett, who was this week selected in the Australian Fast Five team, and the signing of English superstar Geva Mentor, Collingwood will have a formidable defensive unit in 2019.
At the other end of the court 25 year-old Sinclair will be a member of an entirely new shooting group that will include recently signed Jamaican Shimona Nelson.
Sinclair was a Magpies Netball training partner in 2017 and played for Collingwood’s Australian Netball League affiliate, Tasmanian Magpies, this year.
Her nerveless shooting and composure stood out in the Tasmanian Magpies ANL championship win, which was overseen by coach Kate Upton who has returned to Magpies Netball as an assistant to Wright.
“The squad is almost complete and I am really confident that we have the fundamentals – talent, experience, leadership and hunger – to make an impact next season,” said Wright.
“Of course, we have to do the work. That is a given. But we have a blend of established internationals and high end emerging talent, a balance of today and tomorrow, that will be exciting to bring together.
