South Australian Cody Lange will captain the Tasmanian Magpies in the Australian Netball League in 2018.
The Tasmanian Magpies will have a new-look leadership group in 2018, with Cody Lange set to captain the Collingwood Magpies’ state affiliate netball side.
The 23-year-old will skipper the Tasmanian Magpies after being voted in by her teammates, while Victorian defender Mary Livesey will serve as vice-captain.
Both Lange and Livesey are training partners with the Collingwood Magpies in 2018, and will spearhead the revamped Tasmanian ANL program alongside new coach Kate Upton.
After debuting with the Adelaide Thunderbirds in 2011, Lange signed with Collingwood’s SSN team in the inaugural season last year, before suffering her second serious knee injury within a 12-month span.
And as she works her way back to a return on-court, the South Australian native said she was privileged to be recognised by her teammates for the captaincy role.
“I’m honoured to be able to lead the Tasmanian Magpies and I’m so excited to see what this group can produce in 2018,” Lange told Magpies Netball this week.
“We have a strong mix of young and experienced players, and to have Mary by my side – particularly leading the defensive end - will give this team a great balance across the court.
“On a personal level, this is a great challenge for me, and I’m so eager to get back on court and play the game that I love again.”
Head coach Kate Upton credited Lange’s resilience on and off the court ahead of the Magpies’ 2018 season.
“Cody is an outstanding person and netballer, and we’re excited to watch her leadership flourish as captain this year.”
“She’s been through a challenging time with her injuries, but the resilience and strength that she’s shown exemplifies the type of leader that she is.
“This team is committed to setting the right standards, and with Cody and Mary leading the way, the Tassie Magpies are in a great position going forward."
With their season not kicking off until early May, the Tasmanian Magpies will head to Tasmania before the Easter break for a pre-season camp, where they will take part in the Tasmanian Netball Invitational Series (TNIS).
Hosted by Netball Tasmania, the TNIS will see Wales, Northern Island, the Collingwood and Tasmanian Magpies battle it out in a series of friendlies ahead of their respective Commonwealth Games, ANL and SSN competitions.
