Two of Collingwood’s best young netballers, defender Matilda Garrett and attacker Gabby Sinclair, have been selected in Netball Australia’s Development Squad.

Garrett, 21, returns to the squad after being selected as a training invitee earlier this year. It will be the first opportunity for Sinclair, 26, to train along some of the nation’s best.

Garrett debuted for the Magpies in 2018 after being elevated from the Tasmanian Magpies ANL side to the senior list the year prior. In the same year the goal-defender was a member of the under-21 World Youth Cup team.

This year Garrett played six games at SSN level after missing the first few weeks of the season due to an ankle injury.

Following a similar pathway, Sinclair joined the Magpies at the start of the season following a year as a training partner with the Tasmanian Magpies ANL team.

Sinclair acted as a third attacking option in the goal circle this year, scoring 34 goals with an average shooting accuracy of 74 per cent in her eight appearances to date.

The pair are two of 20 athletes in the program which aims to develop the nation’s next crop of potential Australian Diamonds.

Collingwood’s GM of Women’s Sport, Jane Woodlands-Thompson, is delighted for the pair.

“We are thrilled that two of our own will be a part of one of the most elite developmental programs within the netball world,” Woodlands-Thompson said.

“Tilly and Gab are strong representatives of the next wave of talent we are investing in at Collingwood.”

“It’s great to see their efforts this year at both SSN and ANL level rewarded.”

The squad will gather for the first time at a training camp in Canberra in early October.
