Giants Netball (59) def Magpies Netball (51)
The Giants maintained their winning-streak after taking the win over our Magpies, 59 to 51 on Saturday night.
The game presented an exciting atmosphere with both teams new to the competition and linked to AFL clubs.
Senior Coach Kristy Keppich-Birrell said “This match wasn’t just a battle of netball, it was a battle of sport.”
The Giants presented themselves strongly from the very beginning. Serena Guthrie and Kim Green have a definitive connection on court with their speed and fantastic leads proving vital to the Giants win.
Goaler, Jo Harten was extremely impressive with 45 shots.
Keppich-Birrell acknowledged “the Giants are definitely the benchmark team at the moment. But I’m glad we stood up and put the pressure on defensively.”
The first double-header match saw the return of goal-attack, Cody Lange who played her first game after rupturing her ACL last year.
“Everyone was so excited for Cody. It’s a pretty mentally tough thing to come back after an injury. We were glad she came back with such great confidence after working and training so hard.”
Caitlin Thwaites’ footwork and body positioning saw her again dominate in the ring with 46 goals.
Goal-keeper, Sharni Layton, did not disappoint, delivering seven deflections and two intercepts.
Madi Robinson’s speed and ball placement proved vital through our mid-court, producing 35 feeds and 25 assists.
The Magpies will come back fighting for next week’s Round 4 home game against the Thunderbirds.
Keppich-Birrell said the team’s focus is to be patient with the ball, and to ensure “there’s a first, second and third option in the mid-court and that the decision is the less risky pass.”
She also notes that it will be a tough match playing against her former team.
“I’ll definitively have mixed emotions looking at that other bench. But I’m true black and white now and looking for the win.”
“There are no easy games in this competition. This one will be tough again with the Thunderbirds’ interesting style of play with so many internationals coming in.”
Please note this week’s match on Sunday 12 March has been moved from Margaret Court Arena to Hisense Arena, commencing at 3pm.
